Richard G. “Hooker” Saunders, Sr.

Tybee Island- Richard G. Saunders, Sr. “Hooker”, age 77 devout catholic, caring father, loving and devoted husband, great friend, died suddenly at home after a short illness on Saturday, April 21, 2007.
He was born October 22, 1929 in Savannah, to the late John J. and Isabelle Copper Saunders. He attended Catholic schools and graduated from Benedictine Military School, class of 1947. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the Air National Guard while being stationed in Nashville, TN. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus Council 5588 and was a former member of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee. In 2003, he retired from the International Longshoremen’s Association after almost 40 years of service. Since moving to Tybee Island in 1991 he has been an active member of St. Michael’s Church.
Hooker was preceded in death by his son, Gary D. Saunders and his brother, John J. Saunders.
Hooker married the late and loving mother of his five sons, Imogene Deloach of Nevils, Georgia in May of 1960. He found his second true love in Phyllis H. Kitchens, of Savannah and remarried in May of 1989. They lived happily together on Tybee for the past 18 years.
Surviving Hooker are, his loving and devoted wife of 18 years, Phyllis, his sons and daughters-in-law Mr. Richard and Lori Saunders, Dr. David and Paige Saunders, Dr. Kevin Saunders, Mr. Gregory and Jenny Saunders, brothers, Edward J. Saunders of Roswell, Ga., Robert A. and Debbie Saunders of Memphis, TN, step-children, Thresa K. Whitten, Amanda and Christopher Yarbrough, Shawn and Bridget Kitchens, 19 grandchildren as well as two step-great grandchildren.


Visitation will be held at Fox and Weeks Islands Chapel on Whitemarsh Island, Monday, April 23, 2007 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a Rosary Service being held at 7 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, April 24, 2007 at 2 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist with the Reverend James Costigan, Celebrant. Burial will follow ceremony at Laurel Grove Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 802 Lovell Ave., Tybee Island, Georgia 31328, Benedictine Military School, 6502 Seawright Dr. Savannah, Georgia or Hospice Savannah Inc., P.O. Box 13190, Savannah, Georgia 31416.
